Consider the Fig Tree

Daily Dose of Emily D

‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
— -- Emily Dickinson

Daily Scripture Reading

From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near.
— Matthew 24: 32, NRSV

Anchor Verse

Reflection

As our scripture nears conclusion, the storm clouds are gathered. Darkness swills all around. Wars upon wars. Loss - grief. The times are troubling and it’s growing darker. In all of this doom and gloom, there is the fig tree with it budding leaves - promising fruit. Let that be out focus.

Sometimes the path our life takes is difficult. In times like this, turmoil swirls around and challenges are at every turn. In these times, we have a choice. Hope is a choice. The focus of our meditation today will be on choosing hope.

Take a seat somewhere comfortable and free from any distractions, crossing your legs in front of you and sitting up tall. Begin to be aware of your breath. Breathe in deeply. Breathe out slowly. Inhale and exhale. Relax the muscles in your face. Release any tension in your forehead. Release your jaw. Breathe in. Breathe out, let go. Feel the surface beneath you. You are grounded. You are safe in this quiet space that you have chosen. Breathe in. Breathe out. You are safe. Breathe in and as you inhale, feel the sensation of your spine and neck elongating. Breathe out. Breathe in - growing taller - breathe out - feel the tension melt away. You are very still. Enjoy this stillness.

Place your hand gently on your knees palms facing up. Gently touch your thumbs and your index fingers together. This will keep the energy that you have cultivated circulating within your body — this energy of peace.

With every experience, there is purpose. Sometimes - in the difficult times- this thought is hard to understand. In moments like these, hope is powerful. Hope is your strength your warmth- your joy - your song. Hope is the ability to believe that all things will work out for our highest good. We just need to be patient to see it through.

Now lets welcome this simple affirmation that will help us to focus our attention as we settle deeper into this meditation:

Trust in a hope

Trust in a hope

I trust

I trust

I trust

I trust in a hope

And now silently on your own:

Gently move your fingers and your toes. Move your body and become aware of the room around you - the space around you. Open your eyes. With all of the peaceful energy within - with all your strength and hope within - Smile a smile of strength - a smile of hope.

Struggle does not exist without purpose. What we experience both collectively and as individuals strengthens us. Trust in a hope. Trust in a hope. Trust. Take courage and have confidence that on this day - everything will be Okay. On this day, and the next, and the next.

Thank you for joining me to meditate today. I appreciate your company. Have a beautiful day. See you again soon. Namaste.
