Retreat

In order to understand the world, one has to turn away from it on occasion.
— ― Albert Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays

My first memory of this word in in relation to war. I remember watching some war film and the army had to retreat. And so, initially, I connected this term to a feeling of loss. For some reason, because of some lack in strength or ability or favorable position, a retreat was necessary and the humiliating pulling away inevitable.

Today, thankfully, when I think of the word, while I still recall this earlier definition of course, I also think of a time of self care. A time to disconnect from the push and pull of society and to reconnect with myself. In the quote I’ve chosen for today, Camus writes of how understanding the world requires a retreat - and I agree - but also, I add - a retreat is also helpful in understanding the world within. And so - with all of this in mind - my intention as a set out on this day will be to mindfully retreat.

Questions:

  • Do you have more positive of negative connotations of the word retreat?

  • When you retreat, where is your safest sanctuary?

  • Do you plan your retreats, or do they just happen?

  • What can I learn from retreat?

Gratitude:

I am so thankful for my ability to retreat and for all of the retreats I have experienced. I am thankful for the time I take to regroup and regather. Today, I will intentionally disconnect to reconnect.
