Thought 1 - Truth Resounds in the Heart
“Truth is recognized when it is heard.”
Reflection
In his work The Over-Soul, Ralph Waldo Emerson writes, “Foolish people ask you, when you speak what they do not wish to hear, "How do you know it is the truth, and not an error of your own?" We know the truth when we see it, from opinion, as we know when we are awake that we are awake.” Yes, when we encounter it, truth resounds in our being. It’s like a magnetic connection: we draw it in, and it snaps in place-secured. Eckhart Tolle begins his text, The Power of Now with this same maximum: truth is recognized when it is heard.
And so, as I commit to a study of this text and sift through the words before me, I open my ears and my heart to them, allowing them to sink in. I carefully and totally listen for the beat that is resoundingly true for me. Because I know that sometimes as truth settles within, it affirms the way that I have already chosen to go, or do, or think, I smile knowing - “Yes! I will be reassured and encouraged.” Because I also know that sometimes as truth settles within, it unsettles the soul, and challenges, and confronts, and demands change. I take courage around my shoulders like a shawl and prepare for journey. All in all, I know that even though it might be tough at times, I deeply desire to live by what is true. I desire clarity. I desire knowing. I want to live in my best possible way at my highest level. I want to live my truth freely - effortlessly.
