In the Darkness, Seek the Light

Daily Dose of Emily D

Our share of night to bear -
Our share of morning -
Our blank in bliss to fill
Our blank in scorning -

Here a star, and there a star,
Some lose their way!
Here a mist, and there a mist,
Afterwards - a Day!
— -- Emily Dickinson, 1859

Anchor Verse

the star appeared again, the same star they had seen in the eastern skies. It led them on until it hovered over the place of the child. They could hardly contain themselves: They were in the right place! They had arrived at the right time!

Transcript

As we begin to prepare for our meditation today, I ask that we examine our portions of night and day that we have experienced. In other words, to think of the opposing forces which characterize our day-to-day: our trials and sorrows, our victories and joys. Think of this extraordinary story of Jesus. Think of the forces moving towards him even as an infant: wisemen to pay him homage and a king who seeks to kill him. And while considering, let us like our poet, understand the transient nature of these experiences. The darkness passes, and there is morning. So often in life, when we are in the midst of so much turmoil, it’s difficult to believe that it is only for a time. And it’s hard to believe that we are in the right place at the right time. Often times, because we stop believing that we could be experiencing anything other than pain or suffering, we hang on to it, and drag it around with us like a security blanket. The day comes, but we don’t see it because we have this blanket over our heads. We need to remember that our star always rises in the East. We must shed the fear and open our eyes in search for it. Why should we get lost? Our guides are with us; we should never get lost! Our angels will guide us and our star will rise. We must trust its coming and bravely scout it out. When it is in our sight, we need to follow its light which leads us through our “mist” of confusion that is “here” and “there,” and into our Day. With that said, let’s begin our meditation.

Find a comfortable seat on a rug, a pillow, a chair, or the ground. Close your eyes, rest your hands on your knees and begin to bring your awareness to your breath, slowly breathing in and out. Inhale and exhale. Relax your face. Allow your eyes to be heavy. Allow the tension to fall away. You are grounded and you are safe. Inhale and exhale. Let go of any thoughts. Inhale and exhale. Be with yourself. Notice how you feel. Pay close attention to any tension you are still holding on to within and with each exhale, let it go.

I will now introduce our mantra for today. You can repeat it in your mind as you meditate, or simply use it to bring you back to the present moment if your mind begins to take you to the past or the future.

I feel sorrow, I feel joy; there is darkness, there is Light!

I feel sorrow, I feel joy; there is darkness, there is Light!

I feel sorrow, I feel joy; there is darkness, there is Light!

And now, silently in your mind until you hear a soft bell letting you know that it is time to let go of the mantra . . .

It is time to let go of the mantra. As you go through your day today, truly celebrate the Day. Be a witness to your passing emotions. Embrace the feelings that come to you, honor and release them. Emotions need to stay in motion. Seek the good. Follow what you know to be true and right. You will be guided into your Day and it will be a day most brilliant and light! In our reading in the Book of Matthew today, we rejoice with the wise and honor this little one who radiates so much light. Later on in this story, when he is older, he will tell us, "seek and you will find” (Matthew 7:7). This is so true: whatever it is that we seek, whether it be sorrow or joy, we will find it. You will find it. Energy follows our attention. Fix your attention on what is good and what is true in the world. Let it be happiness. Let it be joy!
