26:Rest: The Importance of Sleep

Each night, when I go to sleep, I die. And the next morning, when I wake up, I’m reborn.

Reflection:

I love to sleep. Sleeping is so very beneficial to my being - it is a necessary bodily function. Each night, I sleep for 8 hours. I like to go to sleep at 8PM and to wake at 4AM. My circadian rhythm is fine-tuned. I love the healing qualities of sleep. I love how my body cycles through so many restorative processes when I sleep.

In my life, I have to be careful to ensure that I am getting enough sleep. With so many things that I love to do, I could easily cut the corners on my sleep-time. But, I have learned that I function so much more effectively when I do allow myself the full 8 hours. I think better. I perform better. I am happier.

I find also that the quality of the sleep space is important as well. I try to make sure that each night, I get top-quality sleep. I sleep on the most natural, chemically and cruelty-free, sustainably made mattress. I use organic sheets, responsibly made. I black-out my room and have a completely quiet space. Lighting is so very important when it comes to sleeping well. In the dark, my body releases melatonin, a hormone that induces drowsiness. In the morning, as I reintroduce light into my life, my body releases cortisol which promotes energy and alertness. I set my phone on sleep-time. I love this: my phone plays me notes from Brahms Lullaby each night to remind me of my bed-time. It them blocks all calls and messages until my wake-time at 4AM. I love my life, and part of the reason why my life is so CHARMED, is because I take care of myself. And one of the most important ways that I do that, is through getting, good quality sleep every night. Sleep well.

Centering Thought:

I sleep; I am thankful.

Questions:

  • Do you get enough sleep?

  • Do you have a regular sleep schedule?

  • When do you usually go to bed?

  • At what tie do you like to wake?

  • Do you sleep soundly?

  • If you have trouble sleeping, how do you deal with that?

  • Do you appreciate sleep?

Gratitude:

I am so thankful for my ability to sleep soundly each night. I am thankful for my comfortable bed. I am thankful for my quiet space. I am thankful for the healing power of sleep. I am thankful that sleep is restorative and rejuvenating.
